A key component of the chronic illness care model for treatment of depression is care management: a collaborative process of assessment, planning, facilitation, and advocacy for options and services to meet an individual’s health needs through communication and available resources to promote quality and cost-effective outcomes. Several well-controlled studies have demonstrated the clinical efficacy and cost effectiveness of care management for behavioral disorders in general and for depression in primary care settings specifically.

All signs point to Congress passing a comprehensive health care reform bill in 2009, potentially expanding health insurance coverage to 46 million uninsured Americans. This objective will be achieved through a combination of Medicaid eligibility expansions as well as the creation of a new health insurance exchange – basically a new health insurance market place – for persons earning above 100% of the Federal Poverty Level. Premiums for participants in the exchange will be heavily subsidized by the federal government.
